Was there ever realism? On the periodisation of Western European literature
This article revisits the traditional perspective on realism as a prevalent trend in the European literature at the end of the 19th century. The author examines the perception of the concept of realism at the end of the 18th century (Friedrich Schiller) and in the 1850s (Champfleury and Duranty). It is stressed that Stendhal and Balzac did not associate ...
On the Semiotic Model of Image
The article is devoted to the development of a fundamental semiotic model of images that is based on the categorical apparatus of Ch. S. Peirce (on the concepts of Firstness, icon, hypoicon and metaphor). The image is proposed to be defined as a complex sign (two-level hypoicon- metaphor), which has a certain “primary” sign as its sign vehicle that represents the object constituted by all the facts (cases of semiosis) that are similar to that primary sign. Three key functions of the image are defined:...
The mythical-historical images of Bruno Schulz’s ‘Spring’ in the context of Kafka’s mythologism
Myths and history are different but related forms of consciousness. They date back to the archaic and new periods of world history. New forms of synthesis between history and myths translated in the ‘mythical-historical imagery’ of the 20th-century art. For the first time in the history of world culture, modernism has created a synthesis between the seemingly divergent elements — history and myths. This article analyses Schulz’s short story ‘Spring’ in the context of Franz Kafka’s mythological oeuvre...

‘The Radical Black Colour’. On the Semantics of the Black Colour in Anarchist Discourse
The subject of this paper is the semantics of the colour black in anarchism. The author analyses the sociocultural and ontological aspects of the colour black as a symbol of anarchist criticism of power and the state. The anarchist black colour is counterposed to the white colour — a symbol of power in many cultures. The author shows that the idea of destruction, which the black colour of anarchy manifests, is correlated with the anthropological universals of visual experience. This idea is connected...
Existential Eschatological conception in V.Rozanov's "Apocalypse of our time" and "Disintegration of the atom" by G.Ivanov
The article focuses on the comparative analysis of V. Rozanov's "Apocalypse of our time" and G. Ivanov's prosaic poem , "Disintegration of the atom" in the context of eschatological traditions of Russian literature. Dialogical relations are established between the existential tragic perception of the two authors and the Old Believers' concept of spiritual antichrist.

The modifications of the fairy tale genre in the modern Czech literature: The case of A. Mikulka O jelenovi s kulometem and J. Černický’s O Sasance
Fairy tales by two Czech authors — J. Černický and A. Mikulka — are used to consider the problem of modification of the author’s fairy tale genre in the modern Czech literature. On the one hand, writers take into account the traditions of the 20th century Czech author’s fairy tale, which was developed by many other Czech authors. In Mikulka’s works, elements of folklore fairy tale are interpreted based on the ...

Conceptual opposition Soul-Body in N. Kononov's "Eugenia’s Genius": levels of explicit and implicit semantics
The author explores the conceptual opposition Soul-Body in N. Kononov's story «Eugenia’s Genius". The opposite members of the dichotomy Soul-Body have different forms of linguistic representation. The concept Body is expressed explicitly, whereas Soul is often implicit. Being related to each other, they form an inseparable binom as opposite parts of one whole.

... analysis of the two texts, that are storywise close to each other, not only allows to trace Karamzin’s psychological tradition in Baratynsky’s poem "Eda", but gives grounds to make a broader conclusion: with "Poor Liza" the Russian literature started to explore the most subtle emotional moves in human soul showing them as a process, and the tradition founded by Karamzin paved way for the most important psychological discoveries of great Russian writers.

There are virtually no specialized studies into the creation of poetic image of N. Karamzin in late 18th — early 19th centuries in Russian literature; though it is the expressiveness and imagery of poetry which can have a great impact on the myths in public consciousness. The present study is based on the texts published in the following collections of poems: “Epigrams and Satire: from ...
Antons Austriņš as a translator of Dmitry Merezhkovsky
The transaltions of D. Merezhkovsky’s works into the Latvian langauge by A. Austriņš help analyse the receptions of Russian symbolism in the Latvian culture of the 19th-20th centuries. The author suggests that A. Austriņš’s decision to translate D. Merezhkovsky texts was affected by the historical background of the 1910s – the formation of national ideas in the regions of the Russian empire, the search for peoples’ self-identity, and the 1905 revolution as a major historical event. Austriņš’s translations...

The Russian language, dialogue of cultures, and F. M. Dostoyevsky
This article shows that the dialogue of cultures is one of the fundamental socio-political needs. The author emphasises – which is an axiom for many educated people – that interactions limited to a close circle of ‘us’ impoverishes one’s life and that many values cannot be divided into ‘ours’ and ‘theirs’. The article analyses the increasing interest in Russian culture in Lithuania, as well as the motivation for learning the Russian language, which can be explained by the desire to learn and understand...

A major principle of Indo-European poetry or arbitrary etymologising? A review of modern international publications on anagrams in the cultures of Ancient East and Antiquity
This article examines the approaches of modern international scholars to the problem of anagrams in ancient texts. The author addresses the following “problem nodes”: the difficulty of proving the presence of an anagram in each individual case and the ambiguity of the question as to the arbitrary or systematic nature of anagrammatic structures and anagrams’ functions. Solving these problems will contribute to identifying the major avenues of further research on anagrams.

First, I point out contexts and consequences of Piccart’s Altdorfian Aristotelianism, in contrast to the Königsbergian Aristotelianism (emphasised by Tonelli’s research). Immanuel Kant in the Historical Philosophy of Gustav Shpet
This article assesses the role of Immanuel Kant’s ideas in the historical philosophy of Gustav Shpet (1879—1937). This theme has been largely ignored by Shpet scholars who have concentrated on comparing his logical-methodological theories with the ideas of representatives of phenomenology (E. Husserl, R. Ingarden and others) and hermeneutics (F. Schleiermacher, W. Dilthey, H. Lipps, H.-G. Gadamer and others). Accordingly, the authors consistently reconstruct “the sphere of conversation” within which...
