The study pinpoints a particular kind of hybrid genres referring to texts that mix and combine in their structure the features of two or more different genres but maintain their primary genre identity. This kind of genre mixing results inter alia in an advertisement that is shaped as a chat in internet, private talk or recipe but sustains its genre status as an advertisement. The analysis is based on advertisement texts functioning...
Connectives — full-time employees in discourse and outsourcers in pragmatics .
The article is devoted to connectives, i. e., functional words and constructions whose primary function is to express semantic relations between units of discourse. It aims to explore the pragmatic dimension of connectives, which remains largely underappreciated in linguistic pragmatics to date. Given that the concept of pragmatics has at least two distinct interpretations in linguistic research—here termed the epistemological (pragmatics as shared knowledge activated in discourse production and...
Towards a dictionary of urban untranslatables
The article presents a comprehensive study of urban untranslatables — unique cultural practices, terms, and semiotic codes deeply rooted in specific historical and social contexts. Focusing on phenomena such as Russian ‘ЖКХ-арт’ (municipal utility art), French ‘flânerie’, Indian ‘jugaad’, Spanish ‘tertúlia’, and Argentine ‘merendero’, the authors demonstrate that these concepts resist translation due to their embeddedness in local collective memory and everyday practices. The central thesis...

It is revealed that color designations with the meaning ryzhiy were predominantly used by poets in 1916, with the most frequent usage observed in the poetry of E. Bagritsky, I. Selvinsky, V. Mayakovsky, Sasha Chyorny, and M. Tsvetaeva. Uneven frequency...

Results: The prerequisites for the emergence of legal regulation of the digital (Internet) space in Russia appeared simultaneously with the spread of the Internet in society — in the 1990s, but legislative acts did not directly affect the relevant area, and the regulation was carried out primarily through self-regulation. Nevertheless, government ...
Language and the nature of humanness. Invitation to a discussion
The article invites the reader to contemplate what impedes further development of language science which is currently in a state of stagnation. This crisis is caused by the inadequate methodology used in linguistic research. It defines the paradigm of so-called ‘normal’ science, which suppresses innovation. The dualistic philosophy of external realism continues to be the epistemological foundation of ‘normal’ linguistics, and neither mainstream cognitive science nor cognitive linguistics has...

On the less obvious manifestations of the poetic function: a translator’s view
The paper examines the interaction of the poetic function with the emotive and expressive functions in belles-lettres texts. The authors attempt to prove that the poetic function should not be equated with the aesthetic one. The former overlaps all the above-mentioned functions, but alone bears the responsibility for the form-content fusion. The paper focuses on the less evident mechanisms of the poetic function, beyond the obvious effect of tropes and figures of speech. Not unlike meiosis, its...
Linguistic creativity of the avant-garde: language functions in literary and advertising discourses
The article departs from two non-referential functions of language — the poetic (expressive) and conative (appellative) functions — described by many linguists starting from Roman Jakobson and Karl Bühler. Their combined effect is shown using examples of linguistic techniques from the two types of discourse — the Russian literary avant-garde and the avant-garde advertising-propagandа — outreach. A discursive analysis of Russian literary (experimental) and advertising (avant-garde) texts is carried...

Retranslation as an (un)successful counter-narrative: Les frères Karamazov versus Les frères Karamazov
Drawing on Narrative Theory, this article analyses the second French translation of The Brothers Karamazov as a counter-narrative for the novel’s first translation into French. In the mid-1880s, the critic Vogüé blocked the introduction of Dostoevsky’s narrative by predicting a clash with the French taste. Taking this warning into account, the first French translators Halpérine-Kaminsky and Morice in 1888 framed the source narrative by means of selective appropriation and repositioning of the...

The hermeneutics of poetry is also dealt with in its connection to the hermeneutics of faith within the context of Russia’s and Western Europe’s eschatological objectives, which shaped the cultural codes of the two territories.

Translation: the puzzle of colour
This research contributes to the study of colour terms as a cognitive phenomenon. Since colour is not a universal concept and an ordinary mind does not perceive colour separately from the object, it is possible to observe the knowledge about colour, which exists in the language but does not exist in its physical sense. We hold that the given knowledge is the cause of significant difficulties arising in the translation of various colour terms, though the nature of these terms existence should not...
The formation of the narrative and the performative in public communication
Since the British philosopher John Austin, narratives and performatives have been considered as opposite concepts covered by the generic concept of speech act. At the same time, these concepts were separated according to whether a narrative, inducement, a description, or an imperative was present in the text. Similar to the narrative, the performative is created under pressure from various external factors associated with the system of public communications, to which the author is exposed, and...
Social media interfaces as a representation of cultural meanings
A problem of the growing popularity of cross-cultural social media studies is the lack of discrimination between the effects of user characteristics and those of the architecture of a virtual platform interface. This makes the detected cultural differences unreliable. A way to solve this problem is a comparative study of social media interfaces only, seeking to identify the culturally constituted meanings embedded in the design of virtual platforms. These meanings are employed in the users’ virtual...

The article explores the process of image recognition. The author analyses everyday language to identify correlattions between cognitive patterns of the image and a set of alternative etymons and cognitive patterns in Russian and other languages — Greek, Latin, English, German. Links between them form a vast conceptual space associated with image recognition. The author proposes a pattern of image recognition, which is, in its simplified form, unfolding from a quantum automaton, to its "saturation"...

N. M. Karamzin and the "Byzantine version" of the origin of the Russian coat of arms
The article dwells on the long-established popular version of the "Byzantine" origin of the Russian state emblem: the image of the double-headed eagle is allegedly associated with the marriage of the Great Prince of Moscow Ivan III and Sophia Palaeologus, successor to the Roman and Byzantine Empires. N. Karamzin’s role in promoting and substantiating this version is considered, alongside discussing the longevity of this hypothesis and a critical attitude to it from the point of view of...

Karamzin, Kant, and Lavater — Intersecting Biographies
In his “Letters of a Russian Traveller” Karamzin left a detailed account of his visit to I. Kant in Königsberg on June 18, 1789. Published in 1791, his report is important as the first printed mentioning of Kant in Russian. Karamzin was looking forward to meet J. K. Lavater in Zürich, with whom he had already corresponded for three years, but Kant warned him of Lavater’s excessive imagination, which let him believe in dreams and magnetism. Lavater’s ‘Schwärmerei’ was above all attacked by the publishers...
The motif of forgiveness in the Russian romantic poetry of the first third of the 19th century
This article considers works of two famous Russian poets of the first third of the 19th century. Both works depict the violation of the sixth commandment - ‘thou shalt not kill’. An axiological analysis of the plot and composition structure of both poems shows that the central problem is forgiving enemies – completely amoral persons that violate moral laws and do evil.

Highlighting a deep connection of the ideological basis of Karamzin’s historiography with the up-to-now-incomplete search for the “Russian idea” the paper shows the suitability of appealing to Karamzin’s historiographical methodology against the backdrop of still controversial dynamics of Russian history, with its typical duality, dual beliefs, and vagueness...
