This article presents a functional-semantic analysis of one of situational modality meanings — the meaning of necessity — as implemented in Russian and Lithuanian newspaper texts. The authors identify the functions of Russian modal explicators and their Lithuanian equivalents.

On the basis of Russian periodicals of the first half of the 18th century, the author considers lexical modal modifiers that convey situational modality meanings in combination with a dependent infinitive. The article identifies the specific features of such modifiers, namely, their capacity to express subjective-modal evaluations of newspaper text authors.

On the basis of S. Yesenin’s poetry, the authors consider the text function of linguistic units expressing the modal meaning of necessity. The article offers their functional and semantic hierarchy and describes their role in analysing the poet’s axiological world view.

On the basis of an analytical article from the “Rossiyskaya gazeta” newspaper, the author considers the subjective-modal evaluations
that form the author’s opinion in the text, identifies the means of expression of such evaluations, and establishes their functionalsemantic
hierarchy.

This article considers the functional-semantic category of modality in the system of such text categories as microtext, macrotext, and metatext. The author describes the integrative function of modality in the construction of semantic hierarchy of Old Russian texts, as well as the functional role of complex syntactic constructions in the system of modal-evaluative and genrestylistic characteristics of Old Russian texts.

The author considers the features of rhetorical question as an explicator of modal semantics in the novel The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The article identifies the scope of objective modality and subjective modality meanings of rhetorical question and addresses its text-forming function.

This article defines the linguistic representations of time and analyses their manifestation in the language structure. The basic features of the language of the future as a “different reality” are described on the basis of analysis of prophetic texts.

Evaluative lexemes with the “good/kind” semantics representing the concept of “god” are considered on the basis of Old Russian texts of the 11th—14th centuries. The author analyses the semantic features of the functioning of these lexemes.

Periphrastic expressions are considered as a frequent means of evaluative meaning explication. The author describes the functions of such expressions as well as their connection to the linguistic etiquette of the 14th — 16th centuries.

An integrated approach to the analysis of language facts makes it possible to establish that the functioning of word-forming antonyms in F. Prokopovich’s panegyrics is limited by the spatial meaning of prefixes and the genre of the text.

This article considers approaches to the analysis of material culture vocabulary used in scientific literature and overviews the dialects of the Volgograd region. The author addresses the principles and methods of analysing the folk-craft vocabulary of different secondary dialects on the basis of data obtained from filed studies in the settlements of the region.

This article investigates the mechanisms and forms of anagrammatic game in Russian and English proverbs and sayings and describes its functionality. The author offers a comparative typology of anagrammatic game forms and analyses examples of the phenomenon.

This paper introduces and describes the concept of "talkativity" that is based on the identification of a specific set of conceptual features — the use of colloquial speech, spontaneity, formal situation, and the stability of subject matter.

This article deals with the main types of speech acts with the meaning of consent in the contemporary dialogical discourse. The author identifies the specific pragmatic features of speech acts of consent and offers their typology.

This article considers phonetic, lexical, grammatical, syntactical and stylistic poetic neologisms relevant to the language of contemporary poetry from the functional-semantic aspect.

This article addresses the chronotope formation in the short story Of the name of Lev on the basis of the semantic potential of the main character’s anthroponyms. The author considers the role of the left-right opposition in the modelling of space and time in the text.

Yu. Buida’s novel Boris and Gleb contains a number of intertextual relations to Old Russian literary works. A study into these relations helps not
only establish literary parallels but also identify the text generating mechanisms characteristic of the contemporary novelist’s works. The article considers the aspects of intertextual interaction between Yu. Buida’s novel and the masterpiece of 17th century Russian literature.

This article analyses the mythological and folklore concepts affecting the semantics of proper names in the short story, as well as the connection between the anthroponym and the thematic and plot levels of the work. The author identifies the meaning, functional, and axiological elements of the proper name.

This article focuses on the interaction between space and text in A. Eppel’s short stories. The correlation between the fictional and text spaces at the level of lexis is analysed on the basis of the short story On a dark warm night. The author proves the isomorphism of the plot and the reading process.

This article considers the image of the river Chusovaya, which is directly connected to the idea of space and road in A. Ivanov’s fictional world. The Chusovaya is not only a place but also a character of the novel.

This article presents an analysis of the influence of Russian culture on the central character of F. Klinger’s philosophic novel Faust's Life, Deeds, and Journey to Hell. The typical traits of Russian mentality exhibited by the character are examined in the light of the fact that the novel was written in Russia.

This article examines Novalis’s influence on the British fairy tale writer George Macdonald. The author explores the reasons for the authors to devote themselves to the genre of literary fairy tale and compares the means of expressing the mystical in their works.

This article considers the features of literary and interpretative analysis of the dramaturgy of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and punishment by the Polish philosopher Józef Tischner.

The analysis of Vladimir Monomakh’s “autobiogrpahy” in the context of the confession-reflexion form brings the author to the conclusion that repentance is the central motif dominating the logic of the plot in the second part of the Instruction.

On the basis of V.S. Makanin and T.N. Tolstaya’s works, the author examines the organisation of free indirect speech, analyses the dynamic processes peculiar to contemporary fictional speech, and describes the interaction between the basic structures of free indirect discourse, which reflects the features of the “new type of prose”.
