This article focuses on the problem of forms of including borrowed speech into a written text. The author corrects the established interpretation of direct speech, gives a detailed description of citation as a syntactic phenomenon, and offers its classification.

Modern approaches to the selection of teaching aids in a foreign (English) languages at a non-linguistic university
This article is devoted to the problem of selecting the content of the “for-eign language” university course, in particular the selection of textbooks on the basis of modern psychological and pedagogical approaches. In order to im-prove the quality of teaching languages at university, the author suggests considering the content and structural component of textbooks from the pers-pective of the formation of students’ autonomy — one of the key notions of modern pedagogics.

Images of English giants: at the intersection of mythological traditions
The present paper describes the influence of Scandinavian, Celtic and Classical mythological traditions on the characters of giants in English folk tale discourse. The elements of archaic beliefs are represented in the inner form of nominations and attributes of folk tale giants. Borrowed motifs are subjected to varying degrees of transformation in folk tale discourse and depend upon cultural and historical development of the English ethnos.
