Building a model of terminological fields on an example of the “Pelvis injuries” terminological field

Abstract

This paper is the second one in the series of three papers dealing the modeling of terminological fields. The present paper deals with the practical application of the author’s method for modeling terminological fields (developed in the previous paper) to a particular terminological system to prove its efficiency. The “Pelvis injuries” terminological field is picked as an object of modeling because both its lexical content and structure are poorly conceived in many subject-related textbooks. As the result of analysis of this terminological field, some of its characteristic features are revealed; they are taken into consideration during the process of modeling the field. The model of the “Pelvis injuries” terminological field is built in three stages because the field consists of three lexical-semantic groups of terms. All three stages of modeling are identical: according to the previously developed method, the first step gives the description of the lexical base of each lexico-semantic group using the thesaurus approach. The second step describes the structure of each lexico-semantic group with the help of elements ordering its lexical composition; these elements are distinguished on the basis of differential semes identified by applying the method of component analysis. The third step is a graphical representation of each lexico-semantic group in the form of a tree-like graph consisting of elements of two types — terms and units structuring them. As a result, we get three graphs representing each of the three lexical-semantic groups. After merging the three graphs in one, the model of the “Pelvis injuries” terminological field is built. Representing the field in such a way allows it to create its computer model for further evaluation of students’ professional knowledge.

On innovative segment of a lexical semantic field “Social policy”

Abstract

This article is devoted to the description of lexical innovations in the lexical-semantic field “Social policy” in the Russian language of the recent period. The article examines a synchronous neogenic fragment of the field under study and presents a typology of innovations denoting newly appeared phenomena/concepts or the ones having an element of novelty in semantics and (or) structure. The innovations were selected from modern terminological dictionaries and journals of sociological and socio-political topics taking into account psycholinguistic, chronological, lexicographic and functional criteria. A significant part of the lexical innovations of the subsystem under study were found to be strong neologisms represented by borrowed lexemes and word-forming neologisms. Special attention is paid to the characteristics of phraseological combinations formed in the Russian context. Weak innovations in the vocabulary of social policy are represented primarily by semantic neologisms and verbal signs reoriented to the Russian linguistic reality. It is noted that a significant quantitative group of lexical innovations is formed by so-called thematic neologisms extracted from professional areas of human activity that were not previously associated with the social sphere. The mentioned innovations can be fixed in the language and acquire the status of common lexical units or are terminologized and developed according to the laws of the terminological system. The conclusion is made about the openness of the lexico-semantic subsystem of social management for new phenomena and at the same time about its tendency to remain traditional in word formation.

The novel by Marivaux “Marianna’s Life” within the context of French epistolary prose of the XVIII century

Abstract

The article aims to clarify the genre and narratological features of the most famous novel by J.-P. Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux Marianna’s Life. This work is usually mentioned as a sample of the epistolary prose of Enlightenment. However, the poetics of this literary work which sometimes is called the Second Pamela does not match the poetic manners of Richardson who is considered to have been the creator of the epistolary novel. Richardson influenced the development of European as well as French novel greatly. The comparative analysis allows us to establish the difference between the narratives of English and French writers. While the English writer uses the technique called «writing to the moment», describing the emotional feelings as a climax, Marivaux using the interference of both memoir and epistolary types of letters, created the feeling of ambiguity of the protagonist story (the aged woman speaks about her youth). The time distance makes it possible for Marivaux to become ironic to his own feelings and this results in the effect of “double register”. Thus, Marivaux’s novel becomes an innovative experimental text, a model of rocaille narrative.

The motive of duality in the novel “Cursed Place” by M.I. Voskresensky

Abstract

The topic “duality” in novel “The damned place”, written by M. I. Voskresensky, little known author of the “second line” is revealed through the changes the main character has undergone within three years and female twin-images, who look similar, but differ in nature. Duality plays a significant role in novel’s plot, it reveals characters’ personalities. At the same time duality of female images becomes a moment of their testing, examination of their morality and feelings. Male images (Linsky and Lonsky) do not pass this test, female ones (Claudia and Masha), thanks to duality, discover the true values of life, which are not in love for a man and not in wealth, but in following a sense of duty to parents and natural inclinations. Thus, the duality in the moralistic novel The Cursed Place reveals the true nature of the characters. It is the moral assessment of the characters that the narrator and the author focus on.

Allusions in poetic work of Mikhail Matusowsky: philological and cultural-historical aspects

Abstract

Allusion as a technique of fiction has been studied by various scientific disciplines for the past few decades. This “translator” of cultural, historical and literary information is a significant element that serves to reveal the author’s intention. Allusive inclusions from the works of M. Matusovsky are divided into groups depending on the source of allusions. Biblical, literary and cinematic allusions are studied in detail as the most significant in terms of functional and stylistic use. Allusive references are considered due to their semantics, historical and cultural context. Historical, literary, cultural sources of information are brought to study the semantic nature of allusive inclusions. The article also analyzes stylistic functions of allusion. It is noted that the allusion technique is used not only to give poems an emotionally expressive sound, but also to activate the consciousness of readers, create additional literary associations.

On connection between codependency and the ideas about abusive relationships in young women

Abstract

The article discusses the specifics of connection between codependency and young women’s understanding of abusive, romantic and marital relationships and clarifies the specific judgments about violent behavior in partnerships among women with high codependency. The study relies on 110 responses from women aged from 19 to 30. The free associations methods, the scale of codependency of B. K. Weinhold and J. B. Weinhold, the questionnaire of interpersonal relations of W. Schutz, the author’s semi-structured interview in the context of problematic situations are the methodology background of the work. Superficial representations about abusive relationships are revealed, the peripheral zone of which includes associations of “dependence and fusion”; infantile representations about romantic relationships; controversial representations about marital relations. The higher the codependency, the stronger the demands on the partner to make decisions and take responsibility of the codependent woman, the more demands for a less critical attitude towards themselves and more demands from the partner to maintain unreasonably deep emotional relationships. Respondents with high codependency do not seek to start new relationships, expecting initiative from the others, while they themselves avoid open contact. The significance of the connection was assessed with Spearman’s rank correlation.
