The German agricultural discourse in the 17th century (based on the treatise «Stratagema oeconomicum oder Akkerstudent» by Salomon Gubert

Abstract

This article explores peculiarities of the formation of the German agricultural discourse as a special type of scientific discourse of the seventeenth century. The author performs a discursive and cognitive analyses of the treatise «Stratagema oeconomicum oder Akkerstudent» written by the German pastor Salomon Gubert in Livonia in 1645. The linguocultural aspect of the institutional communication is considered as the main distinctive feature of the discourse.

Informational Field of Proper Names

Abstract

The present paper considers a complex and onomastically underexplorwed issue of proper names' (PN) informational field. The article highlights the author's view of singling out aspects of the PN informational field as well as their heterogeneity, mutual intersections and interpenetrations. A prospective variant has been offered for a complex information analysis and determination of its communicative significance as exemplified by a developed informational field of the oikonym Katyn' (Smolensk Region). The paper also describes methods of empirical material collection and processing.

The study of the organization of the concept ‘system’ in the Russian language consciousness

Abstract

The article analyses certain types and results of the categorization of system objects reflected in the modern Russian language. Using methods of traditional and cognitive semantics, the author explores linguistic representations of categorization levels in the understanding of the ‘system’ phenomenon. The author attempts to correlate the identified classification rubrics with various knowledge formats as well as to consider the structure and content of these rubrics in the context of everyday and professional knowledge.

Functional and semantic aspects of threat in requestive speech acts (based on the Soviet and Russian feature films)

Abstract

Mass cinematography reflects the cultural and mental state of any nation as well as the state of its language. Based on the analysis of the fragments of the Soviet and contemporary Russian films, the author determines the role and purpose of the requestive threat as a speech act, and identifies the composition and role of various components of requestive threat speech acts as a type. Requestive speech acts are a means of indirectly derived expression of a corresponding meaning.

Pragmatic aspects of gender-specific compliments in the English language culture

Abstract

The aim of this article is to examine linguistic manifestations of gender in complimentary utterances in English. The author uses modern fiction as an object of research. Linguistic manifestations of gender characteristics are analysed against the target-related orientation of the complimentary utterances. The author concludes that the overwhelming majority of compliments are paid from men to women. Hence, gender characteristics of the speaker manifest themselves in his language behaviour in general and in producing compliments in particular.

Pragmatic characteristics of complex sentences with relative clauses (based on German media discourse)

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to describe pragmatic characteristics of complex sentences with relative clauses in the German media discourse. The author selects the following pragmatic schemes of hypotaxis structures of the studied type: specification, problematization, irony, simplification, complication, prevention and argument. The single-model and double-model types are identified as pragmatical types of complex sentences with relative clauses.
