Spectral characteristics of atmospheric disturbances at middle latitudes during geomagnetic storms

It is shown that in the spectrum of TEC variations are present harmonics with periods of the relevant standing planetary waves Poincare. Analysis of the latitudinal structure of amplitudes and periods of the harmonics shown a qualitative agreement with theoretical estimates for the Poincare waves.

The authors offer a physical interpretation of this phenomenon based on the assumption about the agitation of planetary Poincare waves in atmosphere. The analysis of the space-time structure of these waves gives a credible explanation of the ionospheric dynamics under observation.

A method to construct the projection operators for the Poincare and Rossby waves in the atmosphere
... Problems can be solved by applying the method of projection operators, which allows us to identify the contribution of certain types of waves in the observed wave field. This work presents a procedure for constructing the projection operators for the Poincare and Rossby planetary waves in the spherical atmosphere in the approximation of "shallow water". The proposed procedure allows to obtain the generalized form of the projection operator approach without the use of β-plane.
