Having chosen the essay as the primary genre, S. Dovlatov, addresses the fate of the artist and sculptor M. Shemyakin. The article examines the central theme for the writer of the fate of a creative personality in the conditions of the totalitarian USSR regime in the era of stagnation and subsequent forced emigration. Irony is considered as a means to express implicit judgements in N.V. Gogol's poem Dead Souls. The author analyses lexical units comprising the ironic semantics of judgements about characters. Special attention is paid to comparing irony explicators used in the original text and the poem’s translation into German.

The ironic discourse in the works of V. Pyetsukh
The article identifies the conditions of the realisation of such crucial feature of V. Pyetuskh’s creative method as irony. It is shown that his irony is aimed at the key elements of the Russian identity — the history of Russia and the Russian national character. In this conditions, irony aims to emphasise weaknesses under the guise of humour in order to gather strength to overcome them in every moment of the present.
