The state of antioxidant system in patients with alcohol abuse
A study into the content water-soluble antioxidants, ceruloplasmin and iron (III) in the blood serum in patients with alcohol abuse showed significant changes to the antioxidant system: an increase in the content of antioxidants and ceruloplasmin decreased and a decrease in that of iron (III). The authors focus on the gender-related differences: men exhibit greater changes in the content ...
L. woodpegion in the towns of the Kaliningrad region
This article describes the condition of woodpigeon populations in 25 towns and large villages of the Kaliningrad region. The author focuses on the possible reasons for significant differences in the population density of woodpigeon in urban areas and pays attention to the origin of urban populations.

Three-dimensional computational modelling of water cooling over the coastal slope: a comparison of hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic solutions
... MIKE3-FlowModel in shallow and deep parts of the basin are compared. It is shown that the structure of fields is reproduced adequately by both models and water currents are similar; however, the hydrostatic model produces a smoother current field and significantly larger horizontal temperature gradients.

Ontogenetic Dynamics of Hydrocortisone Quantitative Content of the Common Octopus Octopus vulgaris, Lamark (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae)
... hydrocortisone steroid hormone in different organs and tissues in the course of the common octopus ontogenesis. The author detects general patterns of its quantitative distribution in the octopus organism and formulates a hypothesis on the functional significance of hydrocortisone in the examined tissues of mollusks.
Hydrocortisone level is one of the most important organizers of general adaptation syndrome in the organisms of vertebrates under different forms of stress. It may be also used as an indicator of organism state of invertebrate hydrobionts in biotesting and bioindication of water biocenoses.

Shifts of adulterations as the result of seasonal horizontal convection under the shelf plate (numerical modeling)
The article shows that the water dynamics induced by differential cooling in upper shelf area (down to 60 m depth) is significantly influenced by day/night variations which delays an establishing of a seasonal water-exchange in shallows. Convective ... ... circle requires 4—7 weeks to reach a quasisteady state. Formation of a linear portion on the horizontal temperature profile can be used as an indicator of the approaching of the flow to the steady state. On Estimation of Rainfall Variations over the European Part of Russia
... variations on the European part of Russia over the period of instrumental observations (1901-2005) are considered in comparison to the hemisphere and global rainfall variations. A positive rainfall trend is indicated over the observation period. The most significant increase in precipitation over the European part of Russia was recorded in the second half of the 20th century and amounted to 20.6 mm/10 years.

The endocrine function organization in flatworms
This article focuses on the endocrine function in flatworms. It is implemented with the help of two groups of hormones. Several centres of neurosecretory cell localisation were discovered in the nervous system of flatworms. The hormonal signal is transmitted with the help of adenylate cyclase system, which is peculiar to vertebrates. Endogenous steroids – sex steroids and glycocorticoids
— were detected in some flatworm species. These data suggest that flatworms have an endocrine system, whose structural...
Climate Change Impact on the Curonain Lagoon Eutrophication Level
... climate change, alongside with other factors (freshness, slow water flow) creates conditions for cyanobacterial «hyperblooms». Probably, the 1990-2000 climate warming is the cause of the eutrophication of the Curonian Lagoon, which continues despite significant reduction in external nutrient load.

The comparative characteristics of Blackbird nest materials from natural and anthropogenic landscapes of the Kaliningrad region
... characteristic of the blackbird nest materials of natural (n = 35) and antropogenic (n = 35) landscapes of the Kaliningrad region. The study did not reveal any considerable differences in the nest material composition in natural and antropogenic habitats. Most significant differences were identified in nest carcass materials. They are more diverse in
urban habitats; most frequent materials are phloem, bark, wood, grass shoots, flower buds, fruits, and antropogenic materials. The share of antropogenic materials ...

In the late Mesozoic-early Cenozoic, another outbreak of volcanism and dehydration of subsoils led to a significant subsidence (8—10 km) of continental masses and the formation of the World Ocean.
