The mythopoetics of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel The buried giant
In this article, I investigate the poetics of the novel The buried giant by Kazuo Ishiguro and consider artistic images that tend to actualise mythological poetics in the literary text. I pay particular attention both to the re-creation of elements of mythological origin in the context of the novel and to new semantic meanings emerging through the reconsideration of the myth in the mind of the author. I address the problem of defining the genre of the novel, which has not yet received a single...

The article reveals a number of important details that differ the duma’s plot from the original historical source. Focusing on the antithesis between true and false values the research examines the oppositions freedom — captivity and life — honour. A careful examination of the protagonist’s image shows that his idealization...

Regularity and serendipity: a systemic asymmetry of singer songwriting
The author analyses the works of singer songwriters, i. e. lyrics of bard songs and rock poetry, from the point of view of their plot and their place in the typology of texts. The author identifies a discrepancy between the principles of building the plot of songs and the methods of creating the poetic model of the world in the central and peripheral areas of this type of songs. This internal asymmetry of the analysed context is associated with the borderline position of the songs in literature....

Synergy character of the category "author" as an object of linguistic interpretation
The article dwells on the particularities of the author’s speech activity in a fictional text as a part the narrative discourse, the interpretative category of author being discussed in the logics of synergetics. In this synergetic mode, the most characteristic manifestations of the actualization in the text structure of synergetic interaction between two anthropocentric functional-semantic narrative systems — the "primary" (author — reader — interpreter-critic) and the "secondary"...

The phenomenon of twelve-tone music in Samuel Beckett’s short stories
This article considered Beckett’s French short stories through the prism of philosophical and aesthetic foundations of modernist music. The rejection of tonal hierarchies by dodecaphonists to transcend the limits of the traditional sonic semiosis can be compared to Beckett’s aspiration to go beyond the ‘fetish’ of words. The study emphasizes similarities between the creative systems of Beckett and the Second Viennese School/neoclassicists. The commonalities range from the work with patterns...
The myth as a source of cultural legitimation: the rock and rap versions of Orpheus and Eurydice. Article 1
Using the rock opera Orpheus and Eurydice (1975) and Hip-hopera: Orpheus & Eurydice (2018), we analyse interpretations of the ancient myth in today’s popular culture. We demonstrate how the plot and motif transformations of the pre-text bridge the gap between history and modernity. In both the rock opera and the hip-hopera, the ancient theme of descent into the kingdom of the dead in the name of love merges with its semiotic double: the neo-mythological plot about the symbolic death of the Creator...
Enigma of magnetism in the mystery of the romantic spirit of E. T. A. Hoffmann (based on the novel «Der Magnetiseur»)
The novel “Magetizer” is viewed within the intellectual and ideological context of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s era, who was characterized, on the one hand, by the progress of scientific knowledge, and on the other, by the success of imaginary parascientific concepts. In particular, the authors trace the connection of Hoffmann's artistic thought with the ideas of Mesmer and the secret knowledge of Freemasonry popular at the beginning of the XIX century, which Hoffmann interprets as a threat to the...

According to Tolstoy, the course of events is caused by the interaction of...

Reminiscences of Russian culture in A. S. Byatt’s novel The Children’s Book
Having considered one of the interviews, given by A. S. Byatt, the author concludes that the writer’s attitude to Russia is largely mediated by the Russian literature from Dostoevsky and Tolstoy to Pelevin. The researcher brings forward the problem of mythologization and demythologization of the image of Russia, and stresses the fact, that the fictional (Tatarinov) and real (Stepnyak, Kropotkin) images of Russian anarchists are given in the perception of the British. The author comes to the conclusion...
Der Prozess über "Ein Hundert Talers": via eminentiae
The various positions in the suit about “hundred thalers” opened by Kant’s criticism of ontological argument are compared. It is argued that Heidegger’s concept of being as transcendental predicate cannot be identified with Frege’s treatment of existence as a second-order predicate. Furthermore it is shown that the understanding of being as perfection by Aquinas is quite similar to Kant’s concept of being as absolute positing in the via eminentiae perspective.

Kant’s philosophy and foundations of the process of aesthetization in contemporary culture
The article discusses the possibility of detecting the grounds of the aesthetization process in modern culture in the structure of the Kantian philosophy. The connection of Kant's aesthetics with science and morality is traced, and also Kant’s influence on the romantic philosophy of art is revealed. The loss of its classical boundaries by modern aesthetics is shown as originated in the Kantian philosophy, though it was this very philosophy in which these boundaries were once defined.

Text filiation in S. Dovlatov's fiction (article two)
The author analyses S. D. Dovlatov’s prose and examines the littlestudied intertextual process of filiation. The filial offshoot of a literary text is related to, and separate from, the initial text and is written by the same author. The study presents a ‘working’ definition of filiation and outlines its basic principles — a creative use of clichés, text reduplication, and the employment of the parent text’s ‘genomes’.

On the function of biblical anthroponyms David and Goliath in poetic texts of A. I. Polezhaeva and V. Ya. Bryusova
The author studies lexical dominants of the vocabulary of precedent biblical anthroponyms David and Goliath in the biblical texts and poetic texts based on the Bible. It is shown that the precedent name in the poetic text becomes a means of expressing the author’s assessment of the depicted. Changes are revealed in the semantics of images resulting from the author’s individual assessment and the reader’s perception. The author demonstrates the dependence of the functioning of the two biblical...

The article discusses some exercises of N. M. Karamzin, the first great Russian writer who worked in the prosaic miniature`s form, a short text which we compare to a poetic one. In the Russian tradition the prosaic miniature developed primarily in journals and magazines. Translations, sometimes fragmentary, from European languages, of both poetic and prosaic texts became one of the main sources of the Russian prosaic miniature. Karamzin started with some translated miniature texts and went on to...

The characters could be more deeply understood if the esearch goes into their inner world. Such analysis allows to discover a few psychological strategies introduced into literary practice by Karamzin: the author’s presence in fictional world, "closeups", "anthropocentric" landscape, specific...

Anagrams in the discourse of baroque ‘tacit theology’: The case of the Königsberg poetic circle of the 17th century
The problem of anagrams is linked to the paradigm secret of baroque poetry. It is shown that the essence of this poetry is a special type of poetic mimesis reflecting the existential and ontological fracture of being, which manifests itself in the lyrical persona of the poetic subject. Anagrams of the names of 17th century Königsberg poets – Simon Dach, Robert Roberthin, and Andreas Adersbach – comprise an ironical baroque reflection of the new “tacit theology” of poetry, whose mimesis reveals...
