Abstract

The aim of the present work is to study and compare the use of pronouns for second person reference in English and Swedish in terms of the
two dimensions, power and solidarity, suggested by Brown & Gilman (1960) and the theory of politeness by Brown & Levinson. The history of
expression of esteem by personal pronouns is traced through as well.
