A method to construct the projection operators for the Poincare and Rossby waves in the atmosphere

Abstract

Traditionally, in experimental studies of the wave structure of the atmosphere determine the frequency of the waves. These data are generally insufficient to identify the type of wave disturbances as well as the spatial scale is not defined waves. Problems can be solved by applying the method of projection operators, which allows us to identify the contribution of certain types of waves in the observed wave field. This work presents a procedure for constructing the projection operators for the Poincare and Rossby planetary waves in the spherical atmosphere in the approximation of "shallow water". The proposed procedure allows to obtain the generalized form of the projection operator approach without the use of β-plane.
